Virgin Atlantic Airways first Airbus aircraft, G-VBUS, an Airbus A340-311 joined the fleet in December 1993. Since then the number of Airbus A340 aircraft has steadily risen and in August 2004, the airline placed an order for 13 of the then new Airbus A340-600 aircraft. By 2012 the fleet included 19 A340-602 and 6 A340-300 aircraft.

On 22 June 1984, Virgin Atlantic Airways first aircraft, a Boeing 747-267B leased from Boeing, took off from Gatwick for Newark, New York on the airline's inaugural flight. Since then, the airline has had a long and successful partnership with Boeing. Today, the Virgin Atlantic Airways fleet contains 12 Boeing 747-400 aircraft.
